Color On Me

Why are humans so obsessed with the idea of time? All they are doing is counting down to their own death minute by minute…
She just wanted to stay. She just wanted to go higher and higher. She never wanted to be a hero. She never wanted to save you. She just wanted someone to save her. And in the end she only had herself.
He just wanted to run. He wanted the same thing. He wanted routine. He just wanted to save somebody. He just didn't want someone to save him. And in the end all he was, was saved.

He was a lost boy and she was a broken girl. This is a true story because if it wasn't, I wouldn't be here. I have turned my life into a story.  I just wish he knew his power before it was too late, and I hadn't found mine way too early. Because my fire could have saved him and his strength would not have killed me. Both losing against the world and its time.
                                                               -Prologue from Color on me-

It all started with two songs. Really cheesy in fact, I mashed the two song names together and proudly typed them on my computer. Color on me. Little did i know that those three words would give me my first completed draft of one of my books. I have to say this book is not my best work but it's finished and that's more than i can say for anything else. More than anything it was a huge learning experience. And i could not believe the feeling of looking at the words “the end” and typing the last word. Of course there is probably 10,000 more words of editing but 40,000 words is still a good accomplishment.

So let's talk about color on me. I based this book on two songs that I love. The first being colors by Halsey and Dark on me by starset. Basically I just listened to those two songs and started brainstorming. The story is about a girl named Mae who has pyrokinesis (aka, she can control fire) and a boy named Grey with extreme strength. Once the doctors found out about them they wanted to experiment with them. It's a story about healing and strength and love. It's about the stars and the words unspoken. It's about the darkness and the light. The right and the wrong. And most of all it's about time.

Now this book is interesting because the first half of each chapter is either Grey’s or Mae’s thoughts. Raw and unedited. It makes them more real.

Before I even started this book I was working on two others and going nowhere with them. River told me to just sit down and write. And now i realize that i was overthinking my books way too much. In color on me I knew the characters better than the books I had been working on for years in just a month and I was always surprised at where those two characters took me. As I wrote it felt like it was really just them telling me their story. A year later I now have gone back to one of my first books “Searching” and I am trying to use the same approach to get the book out of my head and onto paper.

I just need to have the book edited and then work on a second draft. Then i will have finished my first book.

Thanks for listening about it

  1. That's a really interesting way to come up with a title! I always love learning about the "Behind the Scenes" from books, and this was no exception. :) That sounds like a great premise.

So, are you planning to edit it yourself? Congrats on finishing a first draft—that's more than I can say for anything I've written. :) Keep it up! River's advice is good: "just sit down and write."

    1. Thanks! I don't really want to edit it myself but I haven't found anyone who has the time to do it for free.

    2. I can imagine that would be difficult. :( As I read it, if I see something, would you like me to point it out?
